This is the second in a series of articles discussing ways you can keep your child's interest in Lego without buying additional large sets. If your child is into Lego but you are feeling the pinch financially, there are a few ways you can help them to look on their old bricks with fresh eyes without breaking the bank.
Power Functions is a battery based motor system that can be attached to particular Lego models to make them move. The company has made particular sets that can work well on their own or can be fitted with the Power Functions motor and thus made to move. Sets like this include the Star Wars Lego AT-AT set (10178), Emerald Night (10194) and numerous Technic sets.

The great thing is you can also buy the Power Functions motor separately. This set comes with a battery back, motor, light cable and wires as well as a few little Technic bits and pieces to make models move. The system is so light, compact and practical that there are no real limits to what can be made with the system. Making a vehicle roll on its own is simple and there are videos on YouTube to help if your child gets stuck.
Once the basic moving vehicle is mastered it can then become anything, from a robot to a train engine and a whole lot more. The Lego website even has a section entirely devoted to Power Functions. The site not only shows added accessories but also instructions on how to build models and galleries where other fans have uploaded their creations.
Lego Power Functions is simply a wonderful way to get kids back into their Lego collection and extend their interest in this creative and educational toy. Its also a whole heap of fun!
We will continue this series on affordable ways to enhance your child's Lego collection in the next article.
